The Salve is one of the most popular and well known Catholic prayers to Mary the mother of Jesus. Initially a larger and anthem anthem. It is one of the four Breviary anthems dedicated to Our Lady (the other three are Alma Redemptoris Mater, Ave Regina and Regina Coeli coelorum).
was composed by Domenico Scarlatti in the eleventh century century. It is a sequence originally rhyming with "e" but the arrangement of the verses may vary according to collectors. For some time was attributed to Bernard of Clairvaux, now known it only added the final invocation: O clemens, or pia / or dulcis, Virgo Maria (which introduces a pair of rhyming lines in "ia"). Has been attributed to Pedro de Mezonzo, bishop of Compostela and Ademar de Monteil, Bishop of Le Puy-en-Velay and the monk Herman of Reichenau Contract. The simple melody that is usually used to sing it seems to have been produced by the PF Bourgoing.
The Cistercians, the Dominicans and the Franciscans promoted its use in various circumstances (especially in the liturgy of the hours). In 1250 Gregory IX approved and prescribed to be sung at the end of the recitation of Compline. Although primarily a prayer dedicated to the Virgin Mary (in Latin Salve Regina), the variety of representations of the Virgin and devotion that exists in every place where they worship has led to the creation of a "Salve" particular as the invocation of the place.
